Map reading at Shotover . Letters to Beath , Walter and ContCo (unknown).

in order to gain his commission Louis also had to provide references for his moral  and educational background. These were provided by Edwin Heath of 2 Tay Terrace Broughty Ferry, who had known Louis for 20 years through his position as Congregational Minister at Broughty Ferry and Mr A Harris Hutt, Headmaster of Grove Academy Broughty Ferry.
In one part of Louis's final forms (where it appeared to matter whether he was of 'pure European descent') he has been described as 'Quite a good fellow'.

February 1916
Louis's description on discharge 'good steady and reliable man'.

On discharge Louis also had to agree to any outstandings- It is clear that his accounts were always of importance . He adds a rider to his sign off to this effect.

The commission process involved a lot of paperwork. Starting with the papers relating to Louis's departure from The Scots Guards.
Back in November Capt. Wynne Finch had started the process. this is the individual who was responsible for maintaining the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards diaries for most of 1915.
The above is Louis's casualty form on discharge listing his time in hospital between 12 and 13 June and 29-31 July.
31 January-6 February 1916
Map reading  all day on Hurst Hill on 2 February, followed by night operations on 4 February. 5 February letters to Scots Guards and Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry(KOYLI). In college at weekend and letters to Raymond and Norrie.
27 January 1916
Having arrived at Wadham College Oxford on 26 January, Louis writes to Beath on 29th , and then spends all day in college on Sunday 'swotting'.

This behaviour may seem somewhat alien to certain of Louis's direct descendants who followed him to Oxford later in the century , and in the current century!
