in order to gain his commission Louis also had to provide references for his moral  and educational background. These were provided by Edwin Heath of 2 Tay Terrace Broughty Ferry, who had known Louis for 20 years through his position as Congregational Minister at Broughty Ferry and Mr A Harris Hutt, Headmaster of Grove Academy Broughty Ferry.
In one part of Louis's final forms (where it appeared to matter whether he was of 'pure European descent') he has been described as 'Quite a good fellow'.
