Q was the pseudonym of Sir Arther Quiller Couch. The two books read by Louis were written by Quiller Couch in 1905 and 1909 respectively. The Principal Girl was written by the English writer John Collis Snaith in 1912.

Incomparable Bellairs was written by Agnes and Egerton Castle in 1904  ( not sure why listed as Askew by Louis?)

Walked along Havre cliffs.

Whilst Louis is at least safe away from the front, there is a definite sense of aimlessnes in his life at this time.

Was told ears would be attended to on transfer from 39th ( field hospital).

Rocks of Valpre was published in the US in 1913,  the author Ethel M Dell was British. adventure was wrotten by Jack London in 1911 a few years after he wrote his most famous novels White Fang and Call of the Wild. Papa Bouchard was writen in 1901 by the US novelist Molly Elliot Seawell in 1901. The Regent was written by Arnold Bennett in 1913 as a sequel to The Card.

The Great Amulet- Maud Diver

They & I was a 1905 book by Jerome K Jerome, No 5 John Street was written by Richard Whiteing in 1899. Gene Stratton Porter an American novelist wrote Girl of the Limberlost in 1909 and The Harvester in 1911. Maud Diver was a British writer born in British India who later lived in India and Ceylon. She is known for her positive views (relative to the time) on the ability of mixed marriages to bring East and West together. The Great Amulet was written in 1908.

4 October 1916

Saw Walter and Don in HAC camp and saw HAC march past on their way to the front.
Wrote Walter.

Walter had joined the HAC in 1915 as a Lance Serjeant. he was in the 2nd battalion which embarked for France on 1 October 1916. So Louis is seeing Walter only 3 days after Walter arrived in France and as he marches off to the front.

Ears examined again. Left drum perforated.

At Harfleur training. Heard of Morland's death from Death. Saw camp full of HAC.
Wrote Beath.

Shifted to No13 Marquee.

Ears examined.

Started treatment. Had ears syringed.
27 and 28 September 1916
B test and P. B clear.

Reached 39th Hospital Havre 12 noon after 24 hours in train.
Deuce of a crowd of officers here

Wrote England and Beath.

The 39th Hospital Base was formed from the 9th hospital Base in July 2016.
